SEMINAR
The Experience of the Family
During a Child's Illness
Description

This seminar focuses on the experience of the family during a child's
life-threatening illness, up to and including the time of death.
Through the use of case examples and a PowerPoint presentation,
participants will be introduced to a range of experiences families
may have during their child's illness, and to a range of responses
that may be helpful in supporting the family. Attention will be
given to the similarities and differences in the experience of different
family members, including parents, siblings, and the extended family,
and how to provide support to all parties.
Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to:
- Describe multiple cultural variables that shape clinical encounters with children and families at the end of life.
- Apply the cornerstones of clinical practice in responding to the needs of children and families during a child's illness.
- Understand differences and similarities in the experience of family members, and the special situation of siblings.
